Recovering From An Accident? How To Ensure The Proper Repairs For Your Car

Now that your car has been damaged in an accident, you've got your work cut out for you; the work of having the damage repaired. Unfortunately, insurance companies don't always make it easy for you to get the repairs you need taken care of in a timely manner. In fact, they can make the entire process downright difficult. Here are some tips that will help take the struggle out of getting your car repaired after an accident and while you look for an auto body repair shop.

Obtain Multiple Estimates

If you're going to be having repairs done to your car after an accident, start the process by obtaining at least three estimates. The use of three estimates will give you a clearer picture of the process, including the cost for repairs and the type of repairs that are needed. This process is particularly beneficial when you find extreme differences between two of the estimates; especially where cost and estimated time for repairs are concerned.

Insist on New Parts

If your car requires repairs following a car accident, insist on new parts. Some repair shops will provide you with used parts as a way to keep the repair costs down. Insurance companies benefit from this practice since it reduces the cost of your claim. However, used parts aren't always a safe option for your car. Not only can they undermine the safety and structural integrity of your car, but they can also reduce the value of your investment. Before you sign off on the repairs, make sure that new parts will be used.

Ask for Routine Updates

If your car needs to go to the shop to repair body damage caused by an accident, ask for routine updates. You need to know how the process is going so that you can get your car back as soon as possible. When you sign the work order for your car, make a note that you want weekly updates on how the repairs are going. You should also request that they notify you immediately if additional damage is discovered once they begin the repairs.

Watch for Additional Damage

If your car has been damaged in an accident, there may be residual effects once you leave the repair shop. That doesn't mean that the shop missed something; it simply means that other issues popped up after you begin driving your car again. If you notice that your car doesn't handle the same way, or that there are unusual sounds following an accident, have your auto body shop conduct a follow-up inspection.
